webrings………..
Question:
Please let me make a comment here. Have you seen a new web site called http://www.webring.com/ ? It is apparently an idea to unite personal web pages by content. The idea is that one site owner becomes the host for a given subject (coin collecting, Star Wars, anal sex, etc.) and encourages other site owners to link to the ring by putting special links on their pages. Then Webring provides the linking and directory services for the ring, in return for making the users look at ads while using the links. Great idea–the page owners pay nothing, the users pay nothing (except having to look at ads), and Webring keeps the ad revenues. I’ve been looking at Webring’s directory. It is amazing how popular they’ve become–at this time they host nearly 50,000 separate rings, with about 500,000 sites, from all over the world. They have lots of rings devoted to computer stuff, of course. They have plenty of rings for science fiction, fantasy, Star Trek, etc. etc. The celebrity rings seem to be the bulk of their action. Lots of teenybopper the Backstreet Boys. There are TWO rings about an obscure TV actress named Charisma Carpenter…. (just play a minor character on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", and someone will start a webring about you. Will there be webrings for every slightly-famous person in the world?? Is a Harry Pearson webring next?? :) There’s rings about art, and music, and poetry. Two rings about mermaids. One about Tesla coils. Three about DeLorean cars. One about absinthe. You get the picture–lots of obscure subjects. As I did on rec.audio.tubes, I’ll cut to the chase: There are NO RINGS ABOUT TUBE GUITAR AMPS. So, you lucky folks who have the time to put up your own websites about tube amps (which leaves me out): so where’s the tube amp webring??
