Wedding Rings

Question:

Anybody know of a web-site which sells wedding rings and has pictures of them?   We are still trying to find the ‘right’ ring. Thanks, Kevin (& Maria)

There are plenty of web sites on this.  Just use your favorite search engine.  But unfortunately the selection is pretty limited and spotty. Instead, go to a jewelery store, and ask to see a catalog.  Usually jewelers have 5 to 10 catalogs, each with hundreds to thousands of settings.  And if you can’t find exactly what you want, do what I did: I just designed the ring using a simple drafting program, specifying what I want, and gave it to a couple of jewelers to bid on it; I just provided them with the stones, and the finalist came up the ring and the findings, etc. –Peter Mlynek

Hi, I’m going out of my mind trying to find out what each of the three rings on a Russian wedding band mean.  Someone asked me at a wedding 2 weeks ago, and I’ve had no joy finding out.

I’ve always heard that they represent the trinity.                                                   Jennifer

I have no source to back me up, but knowing the Russian Orthodox tradition of using threes to signify to Trinity (God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit), that would be my guess. They cross themselves three times (using three fingers) and prostrate themselves three times before the cross.  Three rings sounds like it would fit right in… — –Amanda Look for us at http://www.hotcoupons.com

Not to mention the walk around the Table of Oblation in front of the altar — three times.  The union is not official until that third time around. :-) -B, married in a Russian Orthodox church and ceremony 31 years ago, but not familiar with a "Russian wedding band." – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I’m going out of my mind trying to find out what each of the three rings on a Russian wedding band mean.  Someone asked me at a wedding 2 weeks ago, and I’ve had no joy finding out. Quite some time ago, someone asked what the three bands on a Russian wedding ring stood for. It just so happend I was reading the Dec 1996/ Jan 1997 Modern Bride Mag and it said, "Tri-color "rolling" rings with several interlocking bands are gaining in popularity, featuring yellow, white, and pink gold. This look dates back to 19th century Russia, where the multiple colors of gold symbolized strength, spirit, and love." I hope that answered your question, if not it’s still an interesting tidbit of knowledge! :) Jana

Whenever you find the rings you like best is the best time. Hope this helps, Noe

Response:

My friend who just got married advised me to buy them atleast 3 months in advance as they bought theirs 2 months in advance and almost didn’t have them in time as the grooms had to be sent back because it didn’t fit. Not sure if this is the ‘norm’, but i guess there’s nothing wrong with buying them as soon as you see the ones you want, even if it is a year in advance! Emma

Response:

I think it depends on the rings.  We ordered our plain white gold bands about 2-3 weeks before the wedding, which left us time to have them engraved.  If you want something elaborate or have unusual size hands or anything else require special ordering, I guess you should start on that earlier. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -My friend who just got married advised me to buy them atleast 3 months in advance as they bought theirs 2 months in advance and almost didn’t have them in time as the grooms had to be sent back because it didn’t fit. Well, my wedding is the 3rd week of June, and we went this past summer to meet with our jeweler to discuss designs.  He said to call him back in April and he will get things rolling.   Nancy  :-) Remove NOSPAM to email!

I called a ring place by my house, and they told me it really depends.  If I am looking for a more unique design, I may want more time, if I plan to use layaway…I was told I could wait as soon as April or March to go, but I am going looking this weekend.  If I can avoid using a credit card or financing, I would like to put it on layaway.  She also told me they will hold the rings until we are ready to pick them up.  I am going to a reputable place. With this SPAMMER guy, notice all his links click through to Amazon…he’s trying to make money off of us, too.  I say ignore him! Thanks for your suggestions, everyone.  I’ll let you know how it goes! Pierced Minors Living at Home

Question:

Hi there, assorted RABbits…         Well then… I’m looking for comments from pierced minors who are still under the roof of their parents housing.  Basically, being a minor and getting pierced these days without your parents having to be consulted is a virutal impossibility, so I’m wonder how all of you guys manage to co-exist with your parents and your jewelry…         As a quick blurb about my experiences, last year I came home with a nosering that I had pierced myself (my mom is a dentist, so I was quietly able to use most of the medical equipment without her knowing :) and I did a damn good job with placement and things.  Anyways, I was told that this was unacceptable by my mothers standards and it should never happen again.  My nosering migrated, and was unhealed for about six months before I let it go. (Simply put – the last thing any of us want is to get a nasty cartillege infection and go through life looking like Michael Jackson!)  So now, after lusting after a tongue piercing for the good part of two years, I’m not too sure how to go about discussing it in a mature fashion with my parents. <grin         How do I try and get this across as an act of beautication and personal meaning without sounding as if I’m back into self-mutilating? Anyways, I’d like to know what all the minors/minors at heart ’s parents think of jewelry and what’s all going on there.  Thanks! Keep modding the bod, Mel.

When I got my tounge done my dad saw it and just sort of looked at me funny, he said that it seemed rather strange to him but whatever worked for me.  I just responded that being a member of gen. X I felt it was my generational duty to do rediculouse things to try my best to go against sociatal norms, although in a way that wouldn’t hamper my chances of getting a 9 to 5 McJob, and eventualy become a productive and sheepish member of society.  Unfortunatly I had to repeat that a few times since my tounge was rather swolen.  He finaly got it though, and just sort of gave me a look that I think was ment to convey that I have way to much time on my hands.  My mom went into the "I spent nine months carying you and doing everything right so you would have a nice regular body, and look what you do to it" speach.   Neither of them were actualy upset about the fact that I had done it, sarcasm runs in the family. Um, okay, I guess this would be a retro delurking thing as well.  (since I posted here once before.)  (and please excuse the spelling, I am dyslexic.) JRKF

My mother was pretty cool when i started piercing myself.  I was 14 and I had my septum, lip(labret and side), eyebrows, ears, navel pierced. She was cool about it actually, but this is also the same woman that laughed when i got arrested a year earlier..:) Tell her to look at other cultures where this activity is accepted as beautiful.  Parents are just to close-minded and should realize that other cultures find it strange that women wear makeup and high heels in our society. It’s just a cultural issue but, It’s a lot more acceptable now  than just a few years ago. Since, I’ve moved out and don’t even wear my piercings anymore.:) Bert

I started getting pierced when I was 15. When my mom quickly noticed, and my dad eventually noticed, they were very accepting. However, this is only because I have really, really good grades. My parents tend to focus on grades and being a good person (

Aftermarket, only aftermarket. Lucky so, since our ‘90 TLC doesn’t have factory lockers. Also where did you get the info on the existing equipment?

From various sources; check my FAQ on Traction Adding Devices for some insight: http://www.a1.nl/phomepag/markerink/main_4×4.htm Below also an interesting extract from Wall Street Week, about future LSD devices: Not sure of the date, but this was kind of interesting.  It gets a little confusing in the middle, when they switch from axle diffs to the diffs in full-time 4×4 systems, but just ignore that part 8*) Also, a footnote… I was at Hollister Hills SVRA on the weekend, and watched a Grand Cherokee try to climb "5 Fingers Hill".  He got about 5 yards up, and *one* of his wheels started to spin, bringing him to a complete halt. I assume the dealer never showed him the "part-time" setting, assuming the Grand has one… 8*) In the Lab: Putting the `Four’ in Four-Wheel Drive —- By Robert L. Simison Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal   A race is on to fix a shortcoming in some four-wheel-drive sport-utility vehicles: In slippery circumstances, many of the off-roaders send power only to the two wheels with the least traction — leaving their drivers just as stuck in ice and mud as people with two-wheel-drive cars.   This will probably change soon, though, thanks to some inexpensive new uses of old gearing technologies being developed by Asha Corp. of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Dana Corp. of Toledo, Ohio; and Britain’s GKN PLC, among others.   At Dana’s outdoor test laboratory, engineers simulate icy patches by putting rollers under the two left wheels of a top-selling, state-of-the art, four-wheel-drive sport-utility vehicle perched on a steep hill climb. The driver steps on the gas; the wheels on the rollers spin ahead crazily; the wheels on dry pavement do nothing; and the vehicle rolls slowly backward off the rollers.   On the same hill, another four-by-four, this one equipped with Dana’s new limited-slip device, takes on the same challenge. This time, the left-side wheels on the rollers spin a fraction of a turn, then the two wheels sitting on solid pavement take over, powering the vehicle off the rollers and up the hill.   Although most sport-utility vehicles now on the market project a go-anywhere image, "today, the only vehicle you can buy with true four-wheel drive is a Hummer [the civilian version of the military's Humvee personnel carrier], and even it has its limits," says John Hickey, director of engineering for Dana’s Spicer Axle division. A Ford Motor Co. engineer acknowledges: "What we’ve been selling is very obsolete and ineffective."   The limits of today’s vehicles lie in the differential — the box of gears that permit the drive wheels to rotate at different speeds when a vehicle turns a corner or goes around a curve. On most of today’s cars and minivans, the drive wheels are in front; on most pickups, the drive wheels are in back.  Generally, differentials are engineered to transfer power to the wheel that is turning faster, leaving the other wheel to follow along without power. The same principles apply to four-by-fours, which send power to both front and rear wheels through a similar device called a transfer case.   All of this is fine for most driving conditions, and even necessary. If both or all four-drive wheels are turning at the same speed, a vehicle will bounce and skip its way through turns, chewing up tires. In the oldest, simplest four-wheel-drive systems — dating back to World War I but still available today — the driver can lock all four wheels in gear at the same speed for slippery conditions. Such systems have to absorb a lot of torque, or turning force, and thus tend to break down. Another big drawback is that on dry pavement the driver has to shift out of four-wheel drive.   Given American drivers’ pronounced preference for automatic transmissions, the idea of shifting into and out of four-wheel drive won’t be acceptable in the U.S., engineers say. "Customers are looking for passenger-car quality, ride and durability, and they want simpler controls without a lot of decisions," says John Barlage, a product-engineering manager for the U.S. automotive operations of GKN.   GKN and Santa Barbara’s Asha have invented competing limited-slip devices to address this challenge. Like a standard differential, the new devices permit drive wheels to rotate at different speeds for cornering. But if too great a difference in rotating speeds develops, power is transfered from the faster-spinning wheel to its slower-spinning counterpart.   Previous limited-slip devices were designed to sense a difference in torque between drive wheels and then transfer a fraction of the torque being applied on the slipping wheel to the other wheel. However, in slick conditions, a slipping wheel may be spinning wildly under almost no torque, and little or no power would be transferred to the stationary wheel.   Dana is preparing to build its Hydra Loc limited-slip differential for a vehicle maker it won’t identify. The Dana product is a version of Asha’s Gerodisc system, developed under license. The Gerodisc uses hydraulic fluid to transfer power in a slipping-wheel situation. Asha, an automotive research and development concern, says that it has built about 25 prototype devices this year for vehicle makers, mostly in the U.S. and Europe, and that four parts makers have taken out licenses to build their own versions of the Gerodisc.   New Venture Gear, a joint venture of Chrysler Corp. and General Motors Corp., and American Axle Manufacturing Inc., a former unit of GM, are among those that have licensed the technology.   Ford says it is working with GKN to develop the British parts-maker’s Visco Lok limited-slip device for installation in future Ford vehicles. The GKN product uses a different kind of pump than the Asha product and uses viscous silicon rather than hydraulic fluid to transfer power from a slipping wheel. in the auto industry say the new limited-slip differentials are likely to cost $250 to $300 each — just about the same as today’s less effective devices. End article Anyone know if this new "limited slip" is just marketing, or actually better than current technology? klash              |       |       I would have promised those terrorists a trip to             .|.     .|.      Disneyland if it would have gotten the hostages            .|||.   .|||.     released.  I thank God they were satisfied with          .:::::::.:::::::.   the missiles and we didn’t have to go to that                              extreme.                                            – Oliver North Bye, W.J. Precious Moments (designs by Gloria & Pat) have 6 books out now of their miniatures (most of the designs in these books will fit in the 40 x40) … be forwarned that there is quite a bit of 1/4 and 3/4 stitches in these – I started using lugana 25 over two for these so my fractional stitches are easier to do and all come out the same … anyway, you can work on one miniature at a time, and then either make them into small individual ornaments or save them up and piece them together into a small (or large) "quilt" wallhanging. One of my favorites is the "lightswitch picture."  This is just a tiny little piece (no larger than 4×4) that you frame and hang just above a lightswitch.  That area of wall is "taken" anyway and can’t be used for a larger picture, so a lightswitch picture is just the ticket.  Or hang two or three of them one above the other. Chr. ornaments are always good small projects.   Have you considered jewlery?  Button covers? Sachets? Pincushions? Inserts for small box lids?  Jar lids? Bibs, fingertip towels, bookmarks? Doll house miniatures? Martha Beth
