When I was in Hong Kong it was quite comical. You ran into these hawkers every other corner it seems. They were up front with it, the first thing they said was "copy watch" as they showed you their wares. On the other hand, we did take a peak at a genuine dealer and saw some very nice and very expensive Rolex time pieces. — Ken Wilson

Mom and I discussed that commercial. We decided it’s all fake, unless the SUV turns into a helicopter that lands on top of the cliff when he comes home from work. But that would negate the necessity of jumping OFF the cliff in the morning. I’m not buying it, either. Piece of fake crap.
I’m not buying it, either. Piece of fake crap.

Oh, I just saw the worst commercial of all. It’s actually kinda cute. It’s this cow and bull talking, and the cow is like, "Who do you love?" and the bull is like, reluctantly, "I love cows." And this goes on for a while, then the cow kicks a football really far, and the ad say, "Good cheese comes from happy cows. Happy cows come from California." So … let me get this straight. These are the *actual* cows that the cheese is coming from? These cows live in California? Well sign me up. Because I was under the impression that good cheese came from people who knew how to make good cheese. This would be the good people of Wisconsin. But no, apparently good cheese comes from cute, computer-animated cows, who can kick a football really far. Is there any logic to "Good cheese comes from happy cows?" Well, possibly in a new-age type of way. You know, good energy in, and it transfers to the cheese. We’ll accept this temporarily. Happy cows come from California. Why? Because they can go to the beach when they feel like it? I just don’t understand. Two completely BS statements, strung together at the end of a cartoon, in order to sell people on the idea that California cheese is superior to Wisconsin cheese. They really have to try harder than that. Like, a lot harder. For starters, show us the *actual* factories, not cartoon representations. Then tell us if the cows are stuck in pens and hooked up to grotesque milking machines, or just walking around eating grass and doin’ it doggy-style. At least then I’d be more likely to believe that the cows are happy. Then we’d have to deal with the concept that happy cows make better cheese. Bring in some new-age experts. Explain to me how positive energy gets transferred into the milk, and that the cheese in California can make a crystal glow, or something. I’m cool with that. I’m into energy and everything. Just be up front about it. Just a stupid commercial. Ian — I’m sick of following my dreams.
Speaking as a (temporary for 22 years so far) Californian, I have no opinion on the comparative virtues of California cheese over Wisconsin cheese, nor on the relative happiness of the dairy cows in each state. But I have to express an overall appreciation of the California Cheese Board’s ad campaign. There have been some hilarious ads. The cows and bulls ("Because cows are the Farm Masters") argument with the football is cute, but is perhaps the lamest one. Of the ads currently running, I like the one where the cows ring the farmer’s doorbell and run away giggling. But that’s just because I want to be one of those cows doing that. As for my cheese consumption habits, I just buy what’s cheapest, and if it came from Tierra del Fuego I wouldn’t care. Therefore, to me, these California Cheese Board commercials are just entertainment to me, and have no effect on my cheese-buying decisions. I’m having a serious deja vu moment here — did we talk about this before?
  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m having a serious deja vu moment here — did we talk about this before? I had some serious deja vu a little bit earlier today. Or last night. I don’t remember. It wasn’t that I knew what was going to be said on the TV, but when it was said, I knew that I’d heard it before. Scientists will tell you that that’s some sort of deal with the two halves of our brain, but I think it’s just one more aspect of the reality that we can’t understand, but which is around us all the time. We’ll probably die, and some time later find out about deja vu, and it’ll make sense. But right now, it’s just a mystery. About the cheese ads. Yes, I know they’re cute. It’s just that I need to get some actual facts. I think you’re reacting to them as just entertainment, because you’re too smart to take them seriously, but I think these ad people actually believe there are *some* people who are dumb enough to believe the BS in these ads. There probably are. "Good cheese comes from happy cows. Happy cows come from California." Somewhere there’s a logic professor taping this on his/her VCR, to use in class. It’s doublespeak. But yes, the cows are the farm masters. I do not deny it. Ian —

I have to jump in here and mention the commercial for the SUV. The kids are in the back saying "I like that one." The other says "I like that one." They are looking at fish under water in this SUV. Suddenly the vehicle comes driving out of the ocean. The first time I saw that commercial I told my husband that some people will think that SUV will be able to drive under water. Guess what? In a week, they put a disclaimer at the beginning stating that the vehicle is not intended for under water driving because this is a COMMERCIAL!!!!! I just know some nut walked into a dealership wanting to buy the SUV that can be driven under water. LOL There are a few out there, Ian! You are so right. They are trying to target intelligent people but they forget there are people who are pretty much out of it.
It’s like Dave Chappelle said. The reason all the phone numbers on TV and movies start with 555 is because some nut is actually going to go home from the movie theater and call that number, and be like, "Is Indiana Jones there?" Ian — I’m sick of following my dreams. Ian

Yes, the DeBeers ad campaign, that’s been going on for decades, thought by most in the ad business as the most successful ad campaign in history. They literally made the diamond the symbol that it is today. This is what I’ve heard, anyway. Who knows what’s real anymore. Or something. Can’t remember which of the many it was, though. Typical how ads just sort of end up in a blank spot in your mind. Here’s one. The commercial shows a healthy body, and then shows fat building up on it. The lady then says, "Now doctors can remove that fat with liposuction…" and then goes on to mention that liposuction is hella expensive. So now there’s Liposuctionex! (Or something.) All the benefits of liposuction, in an easy-to-take pill. Proven by clinical studies! Then the fine print pop up on the bottom of the screen when she mentions clinical studies. The fine print mentions the, oh, unimportant fact that it was an eight-week study in which the average weight loss was a little less than four pounds. That’s two pounds a month! Not *exactly* the same as liposuction, in which you lose, say, thirty pounds, in an hour. So, in other words, it’s an herbal weight loss pill that doesn’t really cause you to lose more than a little bit of weight. She even mentions that 80% of the weight lost was body fat, which means 20% wasn’t. So what’s one fifth of four pounds? A little under a pound of muscle lost taking this pill during a two-month period. Wow. What a wonder drug. I think caffeine would do the same thing, and it’s a lot cheaper, and comes in nice things like coffee, chocolate, and pop. I also like the truck commercial with the middle-aged white guy in a "dress casual" suit, standing on stage with a mic singing his square butt off about trucks. The underlying message? It’s not a mid-life crisis, you’re still cool. Why, look at *this* guy. He’s just like you. Or the commercial where the guy goes to work by jumping off a cliff and parachuting into an SUV, where, on the way to work, he has to drive over rough desert terrain. The message? You may never have a real need for that SUV, but don’t worry, you’ll feel like you will. Kind of hazy message.

I’m having a serious deja vu moment here — did we talk about this before?

Start by checking to see if the send and return cables are properly seated; also, that the footswitch is firmly plugged in. Are you able to find another compatible footswitch? Might be the switch is broken and you are stuck in the off position.

What year, brand and model of amp? Besides checking the cable and switch connections and conductivity, as Phil suggests, you can eliminate the output of the tank, or the amp’s recovery circuit because you are hearing the "splash" when moving the tank. So… If all above checks out, the next step is to examine the tank’s input and amp’s reverb drive circuit. John King

Response:

Make sure the iput and output cables going to the reverb aren’t swapped. Sometimes the little wires inside the tank that connect the transducers to the in and out jacks break. A simple continuity check at the in and out jacks can usually determine if this is the case

It is an Ampeg G12, about 1970 (not the blue diamond tolex model, but the rolling stones style). – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Any idea on what I might need to fix if my amp’s reverb will not engage?
Do you have a schematic to work from? If not, I can email the good one done by Joe Piazza. As I said in an earlier post, since you can hear the tank "splash" when moved, the tank output and amp’s recovery circuit are not the problem. The problem lies somewhere before the springs in the tank. Possibly the input transducer, or wires leading to it, the input cable back to the chassis, are both possible suspects. As I recall, I tried swapping the reverb drive tube for one I thought was good, but if you’ve got one around to try, it couldn’t hurt to plug it in just to be sure. Now here’s where I stopped. I suspected that the problem was somewhere in the drive circuit internal to the chassis, and I just wasn’t in a hurry (or the mood) to pull that chassis. If it comes the that, once the chassis is out, the diagnosis may still be an easy fix, but there is no way of knowing that until (if) you get there. Poke around, with the external connections, tubes etc,,, and see what you come up with. If it comes time to pull the chassis and do further diagnostics, are you qualified, at least safety aware enough to be inside a tube amp? Get back, and I’ll help any I can. Maybe others will continue to help too! Thanks and regards, John King

Response:

Yes, taking out the amp is a pain, especially on these Ampegs. I helped a friend with his G22 and it became a domino effect scenario of things to disconnect and unscrew just to look inside the amp (not to mention the screws are not standard nor philips). I’ll try everying I can before doing that but I will most likely have to at some point. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – It is an Ampeg G12, about 1970 (not the blue diamond tolex model, but the rolling stones style).
Response:

Another thing you can try as a test of whether the problem is in the reverb tank itself or in the electronics of the amp is to simply bypass the tank altogether using a simple phono to phono female adapter or by simply holding the two plugs together so that the center pins are touching each other and also the outer ground rings are touching each other. If you get a large amount of guitar gain when cranking up the reverb intensity control in this "bypass mode" then probably the amp electronics are OK and the problem is in the tank. If you get either no boost of the signal or only a modest boost ( due to parasitical leakage) in bypass mode, then the tank may well be ok and the problem will probably be in the electronics.

I’m trying to figure that one out, too … they wheeled out my Mesa 4 X12 from upstairs closet, but didn’t take it down the stairs … I figure either lazy, weak, or both. my motorcycle ramp, a 12 pack of paper towels, some dirty magazines, <snip Well, at least they’re not *totally* stupid. ;)

My Voluptuous collection is almost completely gone!!!!! Glad you made it, Tony. Me, too … because that means I can make whoever stole my stuff Just look for a shifty-eyed asshole with two boxes of Splenda under his arm! Regards, –E P.S. Sorry to make light of your situation. I know it sucks.

No, that’s cool … you did it in a lighthearted way, and it’s totally acceptable. I needed a good laugh after all this, anyway. Hasn’t been a lot down here to break the seriousness of the situation. Not to mention, I’m still looking for a good friend of mine who I haven’t heard from since 2 days before the storm, yet. He didn’t have a phone, only a pager, and although the cell phone system has gotten better, I still can’t get through to his pager, and he hasn’t called me either. He also lived in Gentilly, an area that got messed up due to the storm, and I couldn’t reach him before the storm hit, so I’m hoping that means he got out.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Whew! Good to hear you’re OK. Judging by the map I just pulled up, I hope you live on the second floor I have a 2 floor apartment, and no water got into the apartment from the flooding. My upstairs sliding glass door blew in, and the roof leaked in a couple of spots, but nothing major or irreplacable got damaged. HOWEVER … , and didn’t lose *all* your stuff. I lost a lot of my stuff. fuckers took my washer, dryer, a shitload of tools (almost all of them), my entire entertainment system downstairs including DVD’s and CD’s, security system (power was off), coffee maker, Avon gift basket to my wife, a box of splenda, a jewelry box of my wife’s mothers costume jewelry (but they didn’t get my wife’s other jewelry box with an expensive watch, and diamond rings … still trying to figure that one out), a box of Splenda, my motorcycle ramp, a 12 pack of paper towels, some dirty magazines, and some blank DVDR’s and CDR’s

It’s one thing to lose stuff to water damage, but a whole ‘nother ball of wax to have your stuff lifted. That sucks, man! I guess they couldn’t take the fuck books without the paper towels, huh? Assholes!!! I guess I should feel lucky … but somehow I don’t

I don’t blame you. Hard to feel lucky when you’re pissed off. Rumor has it that one of his political heroes chartered a plane and he was among the passengers… I guess he finally got to meet his hero, Michael Moore-on?

I hear Al Gore chartered the plane, but I seriously doubt he was on it. I’m thinking that the flooding may have actually cleaned up his shop a little … –Tony That bad, eh? At least he’ll *have* to clean up now. He’s not in the running for the Good Housekeeping award … but then again, neither am I.

Same here. ;O) Glad you made it, Tony. Me, too … because that means I can make whoever stole my stuff pay for what they did in one way or another.

I hope you get the chance… SHOOT THE LOOTERS!!!!!!!

That’d be wasting good bullets. There’s other ways much more appropriate… Mwah, HA HA! Good luck, and have fun! –T

My father asked me a couple of times too, but I think he just wanted to show me that he cared enough to ask, tho it still did annoy me..lol Nowadays, he sees that I am doing better and trying more to do better, that he had no problem at all with me getting a semi-automatic rifle, so he obviously trusts me which is cool. We now have a small arsenal in the house and its like nothing at all. We go target shooting and stuff, its fun. He still talks to me like I’m a kid sometimes, but I think thats just ingrained in his head or something. I always have run away and always feel like running away. Sometimes it was good to get away, other times it was bad to run. I love to play like a kid, but I can only do it with I’m actually with a kid, otherwise I feel like a weirdo..
Am I condemning myself to a lifetime of obesity??

Maybe… That stuff is… nasty from a sugar standpoint. Short circuiting my weight loss efforts?? Any thoughts??

I’m no medical professional, but maintaining a weight loss trend requires caloric deficits, yet the body will fight these deficits with various complicated hormonal responses that I don’t think anybody really understands. What I learned in my dieting experience is to avoid junk sugar calories and go for quality fat & protein calories. I love frosted miniwheats too, but the side panel says it is 1/5th sugar… in your average bowl of 25 pieces, imagine 5 of them are solid white sugar for a true picture of what you are eating. In the end I went with Cheerios instead, but Cheerios is no health cereal (it has a similar level of carbs: 40g out of a 60g serving) but fwiw has a 2x better vitamin profile, only has 2g of sugar in a 60g serving, and tastes pretty good with a scoop of vanilla protein powder (better than miniwheats!). hmm, from a "carb" blood-sugar standpoint I do wonder what the difference is between 60g of Cheerios and 60g of miniwheats. Both are ~200kcal and both are mostly carbs. Theoretically the ‘whole oats’ of Cheerios would slow the absorption of glucose, but the 2nd ingredient on Cheerios is modified corn starch and the 3rd is corn starch, and of course starch is just glucose arranged like this: g/g/g/g/g/g, so in the end your blood is getting a lot of glucose from either. Anyhoo, in my diet I found the ~350kcal I got from my morning cheerios + protein powder was enough to get me started and my 500kcal lunch, leaving me about 1000kcal for late afternoon/evening feedings (I would put in a good hour or two on the bike most days to give me more caloric headroom).

I think it depends on your overweight problem. If you’re close to normal weight, then eating frosted mini-wheats several times a week is not a problem.

Thank you all, for your responses!! I went shopping last night (at Winco, for those familiar) and I was at first dismayed to find Shredded Wheat at over $3 for about 15 oz. But I kept searching and found spoon size Shredded Wheat at $2 for a little more than a lb. Quite a difference in price. I also purchased low fat soy milk and have now enjoyed a delicious bowl of SSSW and and soy milk. Easy to make, nutritious, not too quickly digestible (I think). It is not that I am impoverished. It is just that I just can’t stand to feel cheated because I have spent so much on mere wheat that has been shredded up. The soy milk was less than a buck a quart. What a deal!! Tim 252/252/170 Started June 28, 2005 — Glycemic

obviously, whatever works, works. I just found I didn’t have to cut out the "fat" to lose weight, since if you count the calories your body will put them to good use. I also think that fats may be better than carbs when eating a calorie limited diet, up to around a 30-30-30 balance between fats, carbs, and protein, since they give your stomach something to work on and don’t drive up blood sugars so much. Plus I also think the body might stay out of "starvation mode" better if you eat enough fats. I have absolutely no basis for this belief but I’d like to think it’s true

I’m not cutting out fat either. I’m really low calorie dieting, and since fat is calorie heavy I find that I am choosing foods that are lower in, and thus tending to be lower calorie. Yeah, I know some low or no fat products can be pretty high calorie too! I also think that fats may be better than carbs when eating a calorie limited diet, up to around a 30-30-30 balance between fats, carbs, and protein, since they give your stomach something to work on and don’t drive up blood sugars so much.

I can definitely see that working for some people. I’m actually pretty close to that, I think. According to Fitday, my daily f-c-p ratio averages about 20-60-20. Ok, the carb count is higher than your ratio (which only adds up to 90%, which threw me at first). But the fat and protein isn’t that much lower. Like you say, whatever works, works. Plus I also think the body might stay out of "starvation mode" better if you eat enough fats.
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Am I condemning myself to a lifetime of obesity??

I think that cheerios (74) have a higher GI than mini-wheats (58) which makes sense since they are lower in fiber. Cheerios has 3g of fiber per cup (110 cals) and Frosted Minis have 6 per serving (200 cals). (as you said, if you look at it by 2 oz serving, though, they are very similar in calories and fiber content). At any rate, whatever works for you! ;-) — jmk in NC

DH eats the frosted kind. His rule of thumb is that it needs to not be unreasonable calorie wise and that it needs at least 5g/fiber per serving (or he gets a snack attack). His WOE is just moderate everything and his weight fine. I’m the one in the household that needed intervention regarding weight, although since I changed my WOE and I do the cooking and grocery shopping, his has more or less gravitated in the direction that I have gone (he is on his own for lunch but usually brings leftovers from dinner, etc.). He has gone down in waist size and lost a few pounds during my journey and I feel that he is on track — not that he was OFF track before but having a greater awareness is a good thing, I think. — jmk in NC

We’re sitting on the zebra sofa at our favourite pub when I begin the set up. I tell her my parents were already married at this point in their relationship and that I inherited my father’s impetuousness. Then I unleash a series of double entendres and sheepishly admit I’m really nervous because I had never done this kind of thing before. Finally I bend down on one knee, tell her to close her eyes and put a ring box in her hand. She opens the box and finds a . . . AA Battery Inside! After three months I finally found a way to leave my extrovert gf speechless. After several moments she pieces the puzzle together. "You bought me a vibrator?" Indeed I did! She found the joke very amusing and promised to tell all her friends. We try the rabbit vibrator out later in the evening and it was well worth the $40 I spent on it. Afterwards she whispers in my ear, "I would have said yes." Now am I the speechless one. I always assumed my gf was an aspiring Ab Fab girl who would wind up as an inebriated, promiscous, middle-aged tart who wore too much make-up and bragged incessantly about her college glory days. Essentially the only difference between her current self and the 40 year-old version would be wrinkles, sagging tits and an extra stone or two on the frame. She never struck me as the marrying kind. Anyways we engage in some innocent pillow talk about where we’re going to live once we get married. Then I take her home, we play phone tag all week and I finally talk to her yesterday. She is all excited. And guess what? That innocent pillow talk was not so innocent after all. She told all her friends we’re engaged and getting married! I didn’t even propose but I already have two guys fighting to be my best man. It gets even more bizzarre. Today she calls me. She found an old ring while cleaning her room and asked if she can wear it and tell people it’s our engagement ring! Damn! I guess this is my comeuppance for compulsively scripting my life. I have become a sitcom character trapped in a story of mistaken identity. I have literally been thrust into an engagement I don’t even want. The weird thing is I feel like a stereotypical guy. I’m getting married. There goes my freedom. Time for the old ball and chain. Yet what did I do with my 27 years of freedom? What am I losing by getting married? The opportunity to play Yahoo canasta in my underwear at 3 in the morning? Big fuckin’ deal! I’m going to play along. Though I’m kind of pissed that I got drafted into this engagement. I did want to do the whole "get down on one knee" traditional bit. How much should a guy spend on an engagement ring? Yesterday on the phone Rikki said: "You don’t have to get me a ring. I know what’s in your heart" which is female speak for "You better buy me a ring, you little bastard." Is $300 enough or will that make me look like a tightwad?

Actually, I never understood the joke. Why is it that "Rikki" assumed that a AA battery indicated that Rainier had bought her a vibrator? There are hundreds of non sex toy type devices which use AA batteries. Why was it obvious that Rainier was trying to make a little joke out of buying a vibrator? There must be some context to this which Rainier has not chosen to reveal.

READ THIS BEFORE GETTING MARRIED: "Were a young man to ask me, "To marry perchance, or remain forever single?" I would, given the hostile circumstances today of law and love, urge caution. "Marriage is a commitment of several years of your life, plus child support," I would say. "Do not make it rashly." The question is simply, "Why marry?" As a young man full of dangerous steroids, your answer will probably be, "Ah, because her hair is like corn silk under an August moon; her lips are as rubies and her teeth, pearls; and her smile would make a dead man cry." This amounts to, "I’m horny," with elaborations. It is as it ought to be. The race continues because maidens are glorious, and striplings both desperate and unwise. Note, incidentally, that by the time October rolls around, corn silk is shriveled and brown. Why marry, indeed? In times past, marriage occasionally made sense. Life on a farm required two people, a woman to work herself ragged in the cabin while the man carried heavy lumpish things and shot Indians. Later, come suburbia, the man did something tedious in an office and the woman did two hours housework and stayed bored for six. It worked, tolerably. In the Fifties, nobody expected much of life. It generally met their expectations. And there was sex, though not enough of it — the scarcity being the propellant behind matrimony. Back then, before the miracle of feminism, women had not yet commoditized themselves. A lad had to pop the question before he got laid regular. Women controlled the carnal economy and, in a world that was going to be boring anyway, that was probably a good thing. At least kids had parents. Times change. Some advice to young fellows setting forth: First, forget that her lips are sweet as honeydew melon (though not, of course, green). It doesn’t last. One of nature’s more disagreeable tricks is that while men are far uglier than women, they age better. Remember this. It is useful to reflect in moments of unguided passion that, beneath the skin, we are all wet bags of unpleasant organs. Soon you will be a balding sofa ornament and she will look like a fireplug with cellulite. Once the packaging deteriorates, there had better be something to get you through the next thirty years. Usually there isn’t. Prospects have improved for the single of both genders. Sex is nowadays always available. If you don’t marry Moon Pie, which would be wise, you may get another chance when she comes back on the market with the first wave of divorcees. It’s never now-or-never. Getting older doesn’t diminish your opportunities. As you gain experience, you will recognize the tides, the eddies, the whirlpools of coupling — the urgency of the biological clock, the lunacy of menopause. Men by comparison embody a wonderful clod-like simplicity. As you ponder snuggling forever with Moon Pie, compare the lives of your bachelor and your married friends. The bachelors come and go as the mood strikes them, order their apartments with squalid abandon, drive Miatas or Harleys if they choose, and live in such pleasant dissolution as is consonant with continued employment. The married guy lives in a vast echoing mortgage beyond his means, drives sensible cars he doesn’t like, and loses his old friends because he isn’t allowed to hang out with them. Self-help books to the contrary, marriage does not rest on compromises, but on concessions. You will make all of them. Perhaps it doesn’t have to be this way. But it is this way. Moon Pie has only one reason for marriage: to get her legal hooks into you. She doesn’t think of it in these terms, yet, and she has no evil intentions. She just wants a nice quiet home in the remote suburbs where she can live uneventfully, raise progeny, and keep her eye on you. If you think surveillance isn’t part of the contract, try going out late with your old buddies. Marriage is an institution founded on mistrust. If she thought you would stick around if not compelled, she wouldn’t need marriage. She wants monogamy, at least for you and, with some frequency, for herself. She knows viscerally that you would prefer the amorous insouciance of an oversexed alley cat. You know it consciously. Marriage exists to control the male, until recently a good idea. Now, however, she can support herself, and doesn’t need protection. She doesn’t need you, or you, her. She will, however, want to have children. Women do. At which point, God help you. Given the schools, drugs, latch-keyism consequent first to working parents and then to divorce, and the cultural pressure on children to be slatterns and dope-dealers, reproduction is a gamble. You may not even particularly like them, or they, you. Nobody talks about this, but how many people do you know who hardly talk to their grown children? And you’ve just tied yourself into twenty years of raising them. The moment Junior enters wherever it is that we are, Moon Pie will have you screwed to the wall. She won’t think of it this way, yet. She’ll be delighted with the cooing bundle of joy, his little fingers, her little toes, etc. But divorce comes. The chances are two to one that she will file: Women are more eager than men to enter marriage, and more eager to leave it — with the kids, the house, and the child support. It won’t be amicable, not after seven years. You will be astonished at how ruthless she will be, how well she knows the law, and how utterly hostile to divorcing fathers the law is. You don’t understand how bad the divorce courts are. You probably don’t know what "imputed income" is. You think that "joint custody" means "joint custody." Think again. Quite possibly you will have to support her while she moves with your kids to Fukuoka with an Air Force colonel she met in a meat bar. In short, marriage often means turning twenty-five years of your life into smoking wreckage. Yes, happy marriages exist (I personally know of one) and there are the somnolent marriages of habitual contentment or, perhaps, of quiet resignation. But the odds aren’t good. Permit me an heretical thought. In an age when neither sex economically needs the other, in which women do not need protection from wild bears and marauding savages, not in the suburbs anyway, perhaps marriage doesn’t make sense, at least for men. The divorce courts remove all doubt. A young fellow might do well to stay single, keep his DNA to himself, pick such flowers as he might find along the way, and live his life as he likes. -Fred Reed, 2002

Look bitch I don’t care how much you make or owe as long as you pay your share of the rent. I guess this is why marriage will never agree with me.

—–BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE—– Hash: SHA1 If you’re not careful, Rainier, you’ll end up accidentally *married*. You might go to the court to inquire about marriage licenses, then find that that day is the last day before the fee triples, so you seduce yourself into legally marrying that day, when all you really wanted was the licence. That could easily happen if you suddenly found out that the licence expires before the official marriage date, so you decide to get it over with and marry right there so you don’t have to come back again later at great inconvenience. Hey, Rainier, I bet you could even use that scenario to sweep Rikki off her feet – you could work this into a scheme to abduct her to your (secret) honeymoon *before* the actual wedding. In fact, you could feign slightly "cold feet" as part of your elaborate ruse to maintain your poker face even as all the wedding guests "happen to" be at the resort too. (But careful that you don’t overdo the cold feet, or she might believe it a bit too much and bail.) Not that I would ever plant ideas for such choreography in your masterfully manipulative mind, Rainier. Anyway, now that you are accidentally engaged as you say, are you finding that all kinds of random people are coming out of the woodworks to congratulate you, whilst they were nowhere to be seen when you were desperately lonely and single? Those people who so love asking, "Why, Rainier! Are you STILL single???" (I wonder if they will now start asking, "Are you STILL engaged?" LOL.) Don’t sweat it – many of them probably just never "felt right" about talking to you about your singleness – now that you’re engaged they feel "safe" talking to you about it. You can tell yourself they were all secretly rooting for you before from their little hideouts.

wrote Here’s the abbreviated story. I punk my gf for our three month anniversary last Saturday night.

LOL! That was a really good joke.

That’s not a joke…

The weird thing is I feel like a stereotypical guy. I’m getting married. There goes my freedom. Time for the old ball and chain. Yet what did I do with my 27 years of freedom? What am I losing by getting married? The opportunity to play Yahoo canasta in my underwear at 3 in the morning? Big fuckin’ deal! I’m going to play along. Though I’m kind of pissed that I got drafted into this engagement. I did want to do the whole "get down on one knee" traditional bit.

From this I’ve got the impression that you haven’t tought for more than a minute all what implies getting married; legally, financially, the impact on your lifestyle. It seems you don’t value much your freedom, but don’t you know that we don’t value some things until we lose them?.

I have the perfect scheme. For our 4 month anniversary I buy us a set of matching bowling balls. Rikki hates to bowl so she’ll just have to grin and bear it. Then when she sticks her finger in the hole, guess what she’ll find? Yep her legitimate engagement ring!

That’s fun too, but…

The weird thing is I’m more excited about the bowling ball scheme than my impending nuptials.

Response:

Now that’s way kewl!! I can only hope it does similar for me. I have tried for over 10 months to wear the stupid thing and usually just keep it on part of the night. I think I take it off when my son gets in our bed sometime during the night. I have to admit it has made a major difference in my energy level though. I’ll have to discuss this with my pulminologist. Thanks for the info.
Oily skin may be more elastic but it’s not a result of a high fat diet, more a matter of genetics.
Response:

Having once been 320 pounds, I’m very concerned about skin elasticity. So far, after losing 142 pounds from peak, my skin appears to be returning to normal with some extra wrinkles. Wrinkles near the elbow, and such, are common at my age of 49 anyway. I still have some poundage to lose to see what the result will be. My best guess as to why my skin appears to be recovering, is that I get lots of saturated fat and cholesterol. The body needs the basic building materials to re-engineer itself. I suspect that horrible skin results may be a symptom of low fat diets.

Skin type is something you’re pretty much born with. Although. I do cut down on fat to lose weight because of the high calorie content of fat I don’t have dry skin. I’ve heard people complain about dry skin with a LF diet, I’ve just checked & my nose still shines brightly I always had oily skin & suffered from acne as a teenager. One of my best friends has very dry skin and she’s had deep wrinkles around her eyes since I met her aged 23, now she looks older than my mum! The highest amount of weight I ever lost was nearly 60lbs in just over 6 months so it doesn’t compare with the amounts other people have lost, however, I never had lose skin, only softer adipose tissue under it. Oily skin may be more elastic but it’s not a result of a high fat diet, more a matter of genetics. Moisture (water) also matters, us ladies use moisturizing creams even on oily skins. Skin moisture is affected by air humidity, the water in your region, exposure to the sun, etc. In short, there are too many factors skin tone. Sounds like a subject for further investigation.

I wouldn’t. I started this WOL to improve my health and quality of life.
I’ve lost more than 150 pounds, and if you are referring to the Discovery Channel program I think you are, then yes, I look like that. My breasts look like deflated footballs; I have to clean and jerk them into a bra every morning. There are rolls of excess skin on my abdomen and thighs; my upper arms make a flapping noise during aerobics. I look like a shar-pei, but less cute.

Hi, Kasey, I’m with you girl. Even before I started losing weight I had the wing flaps and dunlap dz. Heck, I had them as a teenager. I knew when I started my WOE the skin would just get saggier and that was to be expected. I’ve lost 120 lbs, and still have about 100 more to lose. I do Shaolin Martial Arts with my husband and try not to freak when my abd skin makes a loud pop. I’m going to invest in some support clothing to help hold that stuff down… :). I feel sooooOOo much better now, and can do sooOoOo much more than before. I, too, think it is a small price to pay to have my life back. I have a 4.5 yo son that I want to go hiking with this summer, that’s more important to me.

I dunno. I think we all tend to credit our lifestyle choices for what may be mainly good fortune. My skin has also recovered well, and I eat little saturated fat. (I do try to eat a reasonable amount of good fats.) I am inclined to credit weight training for the skin recovery. But really, is it your fat, or my weight training, or just gradual weight loss and luck in the genetic draw?
There are many reasons for the loss of elasticity in the skin. Menopause is probably the biggest for women. Healthy fats are a great source for help in the prevention of sagging skin. Here’s just one of many articles that can be found with a search on "skin elasticity fat". I couldn’t find any that specfically suggested saturated fat; most mentioned fat from fish, avacado, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to find many of the foods I normally eat. At age 62 I’m still blessed very little sagging skin. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4161/is_200402/ai_n12885932 Beverly

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Gastric bypass is an enforced crash diet, because the stomach is so small that the person can only eat very little. That’s what I thought too, till I read through part of this girl’s WLS journal just out of curiosity. There she says things like: " but don’t understand how in the world I was able to eat so much only 8 days out from surgery…" She cheated on her liquid diet a few times WITHIN THE FIRST FEW DAYS after surgery. From what she says, even after surgery it wasn’t easy to stick to plan. It would appear that many people think that, just by having the bypass, they’ll automatically eat very little without any effort or willpower on their part. According to this girl’s story, that’s not the case. I am confused, was she losing weight slowly (which would suggest that she really ate more food than I thought), or was she losing weight quickly, while feeling as though she was eating a lot?

Lost weight quickly over the first couple of weeks despite little cheats but then hit a plateau after 4 wks or so, then lost slowly for a while, 1-2 lbs/wk, which is OK for people of moderate weight losing without surgery but she was still over 300lbs. She definitely had trouble adjusting to eating less even after surgery, although there were also times when her stomach didn’t let her eat much. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Was there something wrong with her skin? Did she not exercise? Exercise wouldn’t have done anything to the lose skin, you may develop muscle mass with exercise but hardly enough to fill that empty ’sack’. Absolutely. I do not think that there is anything you can do, besides losing slowly and making sure that you eat a good diet. It is supposedly better in younger people. I have not seen any supplements that would be proven to work. Which is not to say that some magic solution does not exists, only that I have not seen it. I had a lot less to lose, I lost only 50 lbs, and I personally do not have saggy skin. The mechanism of skin elasticity and loss thereof, is that as people age, sugar bonds with collagen molecules in skin, causing them to cross-link and become less elastic. So, if a person is old and had high blood sugar, they would be more likely to have saggy skin. The girl in the pictures was 33 yrs old when she had the bypass. Looks like she is one unlucky 33 year old…

It was an eye-opener, I never thought about this ‘dark’ side of losing weight. Seeing that is certainly a good motivation for anyone to stop gaining weight, knowing that even if you manage to lose it you may not look as good as you’d have expected, unless you have plastic surgery (and big scars left after it) ;-(

But, is she the norm for the amount of weight she had to lose? I have a lot to lose. I have lost about 45 and have over 125 to go. I am really fat. So, it is close enough to what she lost. But, I am not doing it with gastric bypass and she did. Would that cause the weight loss SO fast that the result is so much skin. Was there something wrong with her skin? Did she not exercise? What can I do to NOT look like that!

Why don’t you lose weight and worry about your appearance later? You’re all in a tizzy over something that may not even apply to you. If this woman was your *sister* it still might not happen to you! I lost nearly 100 pounds and I’m only 5 feet tall. I don’t think the amount of loose skin I have is *that* much more than any average 49 yo woman. I’d rather be healthy and fit than fret over my skin. One thing for sure, I would never have GB surgery. My best advice would be to exercise while losing weight slowly.
I lost 150 lbs and have saggy skin but nothing like those pictures. The sagging is a result of many factors but mostly genetics and how long you were fat. My doctor and plastic surgeon both said that since I was obese since childhood and my mom had skin problems after pregnancies there was no weight loss plan (slow or fast) or cream or any other thing that would have kept me from having the loose skin. All told between torso/legs/arms it was once estimated that I had close to 20 lbs of skin that could be removed by surgery. You also need to be at a stable weight for 2 years before you can consider any lifts or tucks. — the volleyballchick

Can a volume/stereo pan pedal be used to pan between two guitar amps? will there be ground loop or hum problems? Just thought it would be nice to pan rather than footswitch completely on or off different sounding amps.

If you currently footswitch, and there are no ground loops, then you can confidently pan… __ Steve .

Response:

I’ve done it at times. I do tend to run into ground loop issues, but they can be addressed. I’ve stopped doing it because it’s extra work -but I did like the tonal flexibility. Chuck

I have two "POS" cheap stereo pan fade pedals. See: http://www.harmony-central.com/Effects/Data/Rolls/RFX_402P_Volume_CV_… I sometimes pan fade between my JMP 2204 and my Super Reverb. I’ve even stuck the second pedal in so I can fade between three amps (for example, a mix of high gain Mesa and 2204 for dirty, SR for clean). I don’t have a hum issue, but I plug all power sources into one power strip (off of a heavy duty ferroresonant power conditioner/isolator). The cool thing is that I can get those in between tones. For example, rock all the way to toe position and get heavily distorted 2204. Rock to heel, get SR. But as you move from toe to heel, the Marshall cleans up and the SR begins to kick in. It’s a big advantage over A/B/Y. Now, I’d like to find some quality pedals. Mine are VERY cheap ones, using open sliders. I would not recommend the Rolls POS pedals unless you get them dirt cheap, like I did. (Actually, one was dirt cheap, one was free. It was one of the Guitar Center "blow out" deals. When I got there, "not in stock." They ordered ONE, pre-paying for it. I got a call, picked it up. A couple of days later, I get a call "your pedal is in." I explain that I already picked it up. Guy says: "I don’t know, man. This says it’s yours and you paid for it, so come and take it to get it out of here." So, I did.)

My conscience is clear… Another story confirming that Karma will reward honesty: YEARS ago, we had a home burglary. They actually BUSTED the scumbag, returning to his open trunk to continue to off-load my stuff (but I did lose a lot of stuff that he already carried off). Dude ended up in prison, because by the time he went to trial he got busted two more times! When I went to the police property room to claim my property, they also had a watch and a nice men’s diamond ring with a 1/2 carat diamond. I’m sure that it wasn’t legitimately the burglar’s, it was probably stolen from another person the same night, since he was wearing some of my wife’s jewelry when they busted him! (Dumbf… had a woman’s ring on his finger with the cops approached him!). YEARS later, I get this call: "Hey, you have unclaimed property in the Seattle Police Department property room…" I explain that "it ain’t mine…" Cop says: "look, didn’t you suffer some loss during the break in?" I confirm that. So he says "It’s yours if you want it, the real owner will NEVER find it now, and if you don’t claim it we’ll just auction it off." So, I took it. The diamond now resides in a setting for my wife, and I put a ruby in the ring for me. I wore the watch for years. It gave me a sense of winning over the scumbag, wearing HIS watch (maybe his, but probably stolen from somebody).

As Steve noted, if you don’t have them with an AB switch, you’ll likely be OK. Just thought it would be nice to pan rather than footswitch completely on or off different sounding amps.

I am thinking of bidding on a watch and although it doesn’t specifically say that it is authentic in the listing, the seller has responded to another buyer that it is in fact authentic and it is posted in the auction page. Question…if I buy it and it turns out to be fake, does eBay provide any sort of insurance/protection?

Response:

I am thinking of bidding on a watch …

One of many risky categories on eBay. … and although it doesn’t specifically say that it is authentic in the listing, …

If it’s a brand and model that has been counterfeited, odds are that this is a fake too, unless the seller is merely a clueless novice. Share the auc#. Chances are you aren’t completely up to speed on how to read FB profiles. Does this seller hostage FB by any chance? … the seller has responded to another buyer that it is in fact authentic and it is posted in the auction page.

That makes "authentic" part of the description. Question…if I buy it and it turns out to be fake, does eBay provide any sort of insurance/protection?

Being a fake, when authentic was claimed, would make the item "substantially not as described" under the PayPal Buyer Protection. Do you in fact know how to verify the authenticity? Cover your butt anyway. Empty your PP account and fund the buy with a credit card. That way, you also get coverage under FCBA. But I’d suggest no-bidding until you learn more about the seller. And even then, bid once late. — http://www.access-one.com/rjn email4rjn AT yahoo DOT com NOT speaking for any employer, client or Internet Service Provider.

page. It doesn’t "specifically say" it’s authentic but it’s posted in the auction page? What’s the auction number? Question…if I buy it and it turns out to be fake, does eBay provide any sort of insurance/protection?

Only if the seller *and* specific transaction qualifies….and the item is "significantly different". According to what you’ve said, it sounds like a screaming fake, and says so in the auciton. http://pages.ebay.com/help/tp/questions/protection-program.html Kris

The first rule of buying jewelry on eBay is DON’T!!! If you must, only spend what you are willing to hand to a street beggar or mugger since it’s totally and utterly foolish to buy any jewelry over $19.95 on eBay. You are guaranteed to get a fake, substandard, or mall quality item. Buying jewelry should only be done locally from a trusted jeweler.
